Why we bought a mill instead of a bigger sales team

Owning the dyeing and finishing steps meant we could fix the problems that cause most complaints, rather than explain them.

A factory that buys fabric on the open market has one response when a shade comes back wrong or a garment shrinks after the first wash: an apology, and a conversation with a supplier who is already onto the next order.

So we stopped

Taking on our own dyeing and finishing was expensive and slow to pay back. What it bought was the ability to correct rather than apologise.

  • Colour is matched here, and we can adjust it the same week
  • Shrinkage and colour loss are tested before the fabric is approved, not after a garment fails
  • A repeat order two seasons later matches, because the recipe is on file

It also gave us something to sell that is not just capacity. A good share of what we ship each year uses a fabric that did not exist a couple of years ago.
